*MILD SPOILER WARNING FOR FANTASY HIGH* When the Bad Kids are at their most desperate, there's only one family they can rely on: The Cubbys, Elmville's most wholesome anti-authoritarian revolutionary halfling family.

For this rebrand project, we are expected to rethink the current design elements and systems in a way that either execute’s the brands current morals/beliefs or recreates the brands current values. The brand I chose to rebrand was Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt; They are a frozen yogurt chain, providing various fro-yo flavors with toppings, and flavored fro-yo cakes.

The issue I found with thier previous branding system was that it was too overstimulating for thier goals as a company. “Our dream was to create a custom frozen yogurt store where people from all walks of life and ages can enjoy themselves not only with a great tasting treat of quality frozen yogurt, but from a unique experience in a fun and happy environment that makes every guest smile.” These overwhelming and eye burning designs may be effective for young children, but do not provide Menchie’s with a welcoming voice. I wanted this rebrand to mature the aesthetic, while still making the design fun and enjoyable.

The essential changes I chose to make was to adjust the color palette. From neon greens and pinks, the new color palette recognizes the enjoyment of the original brand, but is more calming than before. The logo took homage from the original yogurt swirl, but made it much more fresh and modern. Font choices are meant to envoke fun, but cleanliness. Keywords used to describe the new brand would be welcoming, soft, and fun. The overall Menchie’s rebrand is actively focusing on creating a calm, welcoming community, and sense of togetherness amongst patrons.

For this assignment, our expectation was to film and edit a music video. I chose an upbeat, but intense song, called “I Want More” by Bangs. The chosen song expresses the obsessive behavior many of us have around content consumption. Throughout the video, I wanted to show how this over-consumption and lack of self-control creates a disconnection from reality. The video and editing is meant to provide an hyper and overwhelming effect on the audience, almost as if you are also being sucked into the virtual world.

Project Assignment: Design a fictional convention; Items that must be designed are a brochure, way finding, and badges.

Project Assignment: Design a promotional poster (including logo and chosen films) for a fictional film festival. Concept should be clear and fit with the chosen films.

The object instakit is an in-depth breakdown and abstraction of simple, everyday items. The object I was assigned was a pencil sharpener.

What problem were you trying to solve? I wanted to show the pencil sharpener I own in a more colorful and exciting way. My pencil sharpener is not fun or cool, but I find using it very satisfying. I often use mine more for colored pencils, since I normally use mechanical, graphite pencils.

How did you solve it? I chose to use softer pastel colors. I chose some of the more basic, almost innocent/childlike colors. Combined with the harshness of the black backgrounds and shapes, I feel like it has a more serious aesthetic.

Project Assignment: Design a multi-page brand/marketing ‘deck’. The objective is to tell a cohesive and compelling narrative about the lifestyle of your product/ brand as a ‘proof of concept’ micro marketing campaign.

Project Assignment: Edit yourself into 2 types of photos. One closeup (enough so that you are recognizable), and one environment (enough so that you may not be as recognizable). Consider your pose for each photo; Does the action of your pose fit the environment?

Project Assignment: Design branding, stationary, merchandise, and a website for a fictional art gallery.

Project Assignment: Select a USA National Park, then design a promotional National Park poster and a grid based National Park brochure (following NSP brochure branding).

Project Assignment: Design an event poster leaning heavily on the International Typographic Style. It should be clean, neutral, typegrid oriented.

Project Assignment: Design three consecutive 2-page spreads. Each two page spread will provide a type specimen of a particular typeface.

Areas of my narrative that I believe are successful are the way I am able to use implied lines to connect each box, the use of color and value, and the overall execution of the narrative itself. I believe that my message is way more clear now compared to the original design. I do think I meet all of my goals and objectives. My visual narrative has a well articulated concept through its composition and visual hierarchy. I wanted to place purpose and significance into each part of the design, which I believe captured exactly what I wanted.

This story was very compelling with it’s already existing metaphors. In my cover, I wanted to capture the main character’s essence through the metaphor of dying motherly love. By representing the character as the wilting pink carnation, I wanted to show how she implicitly wants to be with her absent mother, but still fails to accurately relate to her own daughter. The story ends with, “When my daughter is older, I know she will understand. I know she will be okay. Just like I am.” No one who is “okay” runs aways from their responsibilities, especially when it's their own child. The pink carnation not only shows how her mother lacks love for her, but how she lacks love for her own daughter.

These paintings are both from my Painting 1 class during spring term, 2020. The first painting is of my succulent, “Succy” and the second painting is of a piece of folded paper. I believe both show my improvement of skills compared to previous pieces. This class really taught me that real improvement and motivation comes from comparing your current work to your past work. When you compare your own abilities to other artists, you often fail to realize that they may have more experience or better training than you. Someday, I hope to learn from the mistakes in these paintings and create even better pieces of art. Being critical to your artwork is part of the process. Just make sure you keep working.

These pieces were made during my first year of college, in my Drawing Studio class. We were first assigned to draw ourselves while we sat in front of a mirror. I found this very disorienting, but I tried my best. I chose to use charcoal and positioned myself at a 3/4 view angle.

For our second part of the project, we were supposed to draw our alter-ego. I like to think that my alter-ego’s personality is similar to the Joker or Harley Quinn. I wanted to do a caricature of myself since I find myself more amused by my imperfections that most people. I used highlighter and crayon as my medium, since they are more childish and vibrant materials. The reason I wanted to involve the triangle background is because I think my hair is a large part of who I am and it emphasizes my triangle shaped hair style.

This project was made during my first year of college, in my Drawing Studio class. We were asked to draw a building or room found on campus, then add surreal imagery. For this project, I used graphite pencils, colored pencils, acrylic pens, and gel pens.

I was requested by Outfield Beer Company to create an image of a train and was also asked to incorporate the company’s logo into the image. I had a lot more freedom with this project, but that entailed a lot more brain power and creativity. The train’s significance to the company is due to the railroad tracks adjacent to their brewery.

I used the app Procreate to design this piece, which took around 25 hours.

This pattern piece is from a 2D Studio Art class I took during fall term, 2019. This piece strongly shows off my ability with creating bold color palettes and contrast in a design. I love working with bright neon colors, which this project proved to be perfect to show that. The comical yet natural looks of each design creates an interesting, yet eye-catching combination. I hope to do more designs like this in the future.

The goal of this project was to use grey-scale value to help build perspective. During the process, an implicit visual narrative formed through each pieces imagery similarities.

This was another one of my designs for Outfield Beer Company. This illustration is based on Boston’s Boston album.

This is one of my favorite pieces I have made. I love the amount of color and shading that I was able to execute. This project has the most amount of detail I have ever put into an art piece. The detailing of the skyline. The details in the shredded baseball. The stars. The look of the glass dome. I’m so happy with how this turned out.

This design was created for a company called Wayward & Wild. They are a nature themed lifestyle apparel company that use screen printing to apply designs to clothing. I was assigned this project while participating in a School to Career Extended Learning Opportunity Contest, during my senior year of high school.

The goal was to create a shirt design that captures the Wayward & Wild brand. I used their common imagery of a mountain and trees to build upon their brand aesthetic. I also used the font Francisco, which is often seen in their apparel designs. They also gave me access to their logo, which I placed on the front of the shirt. With this design, I wanted to show the freedom and “outside the box” mindset that nature gives you. To visually show this, the mountain and arrows extend off the boundaries of the box.

This design was made for Outfield Beer Company. The owner of the company commissioned me to create a design loosely based on the album cover art Celebration Day by Led Zepplin. He requested changes to the imagery to replicate the skyline of Kansas City, Missouri.

This was a very difficult project since it was my first professional commission with a client. I learned about communication, problem solving, time management, and my own abilities with design.

This series of digital illustrations was created for the Oregon Scholastic Awards. As a senior, you are able to send in a portfolio. Portfolios are best judged when they are similar in style or technique.

My portfolio was influenced by the idea of interpretation. The majority of the people drawn in this portfolio are friends of mine. Each person has a different personality and I wanted to express that about them. A large component of my portfolio is the lighting in each drawing. I wanted each person to take a selfie or photo with textured or colored lighting on their face. I felt that it was an interesting touch to each piece and helped express a person’s emotional state. This project was very difficult since I was short on time and rushed to finish the pieces before the Scholastic deadline. I still believe that they turned out very well and really portray my style as an artist.

I love to travel. One of my favorite locations to visit is San Francisco. Over spring break 2019, my family and I went back to experience what the city has to offer. This trip was one of the first times I used a semi-professional camera to take photos of landmarks, wildlife, and art.

The goal of this project was to first design a font, then later use that font for a food truck or restaurant. This was my first experience with typography. I taught myself how to change the font design a little bit for each letter while also making it easy to read.

The font I made is called MISO and the food truck I made is called TOKYO HEAT. I created a fake company based around spicy ramen because it was one of my favorite things to make throughout middle school.

Sunset Design Week (SDW) is an event my high school’s design program puts on to show non-art students what the graphic design classes are up to. This event also gives an insight into the life of a designer since alumni from Sunset come and speak about their current jobs and give advice on how to succeed as a designer.

During my final year of graphic design (GD 4) in high school, we were assigned a full class, group project. This project was to design everything that would be displayed for SDW 2018. At the beginning, my job was to design an alumni speaker bio poster and a t-shirt order form. As the project went on, more of my classmates would miss class and fall behind on their work. I took on the job of assisting those students by helping design the t-shirts, creating contour drawing portraits of each speaker, and putting up decorations. This was one of the most stressful team jobs I have ever been involved in, since majority of the students rushed to get their work done, and I felt flooded with work (I loved it).

This project really taught me how to manage time, help others with their tasks, and communicate with my team.

Art Fest is an event for people of all ages and backgrounds to come to Sunset High School and view the artwork made by students throughout the year. During my third year of high school, my graphic design class was assigned to design multiple types of advertising or merchandise that would be seen before and at the event.

My job was to design small Art Fest invitations. Each design needed to have a cohesive coloring and font. I loved this project since it was my first time designing with a team and being able to see people interacting with my work.

This project was made for a class contest. Our client wanted a poster design that promoted a popular bike challenge.

These are some of my first designs. The assignment was to create an icon or poster about a song. The two songs I chose were; “Death of a Bachelor” by Panic! at the Disco and “Kiss Me Thru The Phone” by Soulja Boy.
